To accompany our current exhibition, Kimono: The Making of a Cultural Icon, we are delighted to offer a demonstration of kimono dressing with insights into the subtleties of this iconic garment. Yumiko Jones, a qualified practitioner of kitsuke, the art of kimono-dressing, will demonstrate how it is worn with the elaborately tied obi belt, using a model and a furisode. This type of long-sleeved kimono is only appropriate for young women and traditionally worn for the coming-of-age day ceremony.

Along with the demonstration there will be an explanation of the various types of kimono by Fiona Cole, exploring why the time, place and occasion for which they are worn is an important consideration and how there has been a subtle evolution in fashions.

Following the event, you will have a chance to explore the Museum and enjoy our current exhibitions while we are closed to the wider public.
