From Hong Kong to Bath: A Lifelong Journey of Collecting is an exhibition celebrating 30 years since the founding of the Museum of East Asian Art in Bath and pays tribute to the Museum founder Brian Shane McElney OBE (1932-2023), who passed away in April this year at the age of 90. Brian was a distinguished lawyer and long-term resident of Hong Kong, who dedicated himself to collecting and studying East and Southeast Asian Art. From the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong street markets to an elegant Georgian townhouse in Bath, this talk looks at Brian’s fascinating life and, through a series of rare historical photographs and a selection of highlight objects from the Museum collection, uncovers hidden stories about our Museum treasures and acknowledges the contribution of wider communities in Hong Kong and Bath that have helped to shape the Museum over the decades.
